The word “Friulano” is the name used since 2007 to call the vine “Tocai Friulano” as its original name was, to which the Friulians were particularly fond. But what happened? In 1993 the agreements between the EEC and Hungary sanctioned the protection of the Hungarian name Tokaji. Likewise, a transitional period was agreed, up to 31 March 2007, during which the designation Tocai Friulano was allowed for the wine produced in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.
From that day on, an era of romantic affection dedicated to a name that represented the roots and traditions of a territory for many came to an end. There are many producers today who call their Friulian wines in protest “NO NAME” or “JAKOT” (Tokaj on the contrary) in memory of a lost name.
Author Suggestion
“A wine of presence, of character, of extreme personality. When you open a bottle of Stefano Novello’s Friulano at the table it is as if you were adding another diner, such is the intimacy and dialogic relationship that is created with the wine at the moment of tasting. A wine to accompany a meal with white meats, fish soups, pasta with medium-structured sauces, but also aged cheeses. A wine deserving to be drunk even alone accompanied only by our meditation, contemplation and reflection. ” Gus’s team
